What will I explore?

Program Highlights: 

  • Explore the beautiful country of Belize 
  • Experience Cultural immersion into Belizean and Mayan cultures
  • Visit various Belizean towns  
  • 8-10 Days Placed in a local Belizean Ministry of Education Preschool or elementary school
  • Learn basic Spanish 
  • Participate in cultural activities, tour Mayan Ruins, TBD: Snorkeling, River Tour or Cacao Tour

What will I learn?

During this 14-day program, students will learn about the country, culture and educational system in Belize, as well as some child-centered teaching methods. The group will have the opportunity to learn with local community college education students.  Students will be assigned to a Belizean Preschool or Elementary School for 8-10 days. 

What's included in the cost?

$3,800-4,500 is the estimated program cost, and includes: 

  • round-trip airfare 
  • lodging - shared room 2-4
  • international health coverage 
  • transportation from ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ to O’Hare airport and back 
  • in-country transportation, air, boat, bus
  • entrance fees to cultural adventures
  • daily continental breakfast, and some additional meals 

Costs do not include: tuition, some meals, personal spending money, and passport fees. 

When are the payment deadlines?

  • $500 due within 2 weeks once accepted  
  • $1,000 early October 
  • $1,000 early November 
  • $1,000 early December 
  • $Final Payment TBD  

Payments are made through a Square invoice emailed. 

The refund policy is explained on the study abroad application. 

What financial support is available?

Apply to the International Programs Study Abroad Grant 

  • Awards are typically between $200-$800.             
  • Underrepresented students can be awarded up to $1,000 
  • Grant applications are due the same date as the study abroad application deadline. The application is included in the study abroad application. 
  • If you are not FAFSA eligible you can still apply 

Apply for FAFSA 

  • Pell grant recipients can use any remaining funds to help pay for study abroad. 
  • Talk to a Financial Aid Advisor by visiting the Welcome Center, SC240 or calling 920-498-5444

Apply to the Foundation Scholarships 

  • Awards are anywhere from $500 to $2000! 
  • Apply by logging into your my.¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ, click Finances, and next click “Apply for a Scholarship” 
  • Deadlines are November 1st and March 15th  

Apply to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship 

  • Students can be awarded up to $5,000! 
  • Applicants must be a Pell Grant recipient and be taking the study abroad program for credit 
  • Application deadlines in October and March

Get creative 

  • Students can organize a fundraising event 
  • Use electronic resources like Kickstarter and GoFundMe 
  • Waive holiday and birthday gifts for financial gifts
