On January 14, 2023, 冈本视频 hosted the 28th annual Brown County MLK Celebration, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“This event serves as a reminder that the fight for racial justice is not only happening across the nation, but here in our own backyard as well,” said Dr. Sara Lam, 冈本视频 vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion and committee member of Brown County MLK Celebration. “This special day recognizes and brings together the diverse groups that make our community strong and united. We want to continue using this as an opportunity for participants to examine their roles in creating the type of community Dr. King envisioned.”
Hundreds of community members gathered at 冈本视频 to participate in the festivities such as
- K-12 contest to creatively interpret this year’s theme through illustration, writing and narrative
- Performances from Washington, Lombardi middle school, and Dr. John W. Miller Jr.
- Award recognition for teachers and community members
This year’s celebration will carry the theme of Reaching for the Mountaintops…How Do We Get There. The theme channels our personal journey towards justice, equality, and harmony. Asking us to reflect on what are we doing to reach out goals? How do we get there as individuals? How are we working together as a community?
The Brown County Celebration Committee is a non-profit organization and is run by representatives from 冈本视频, UW-Green Bay, St. Norbert College, Green Bay Area Public Schools, Bellin Health, Humana, Privilege Institute, and Lovin’ The Skin I’m In.
“Racial justice is not the work of one day or one month. We should acknowledge that these moments, such as MLK Day, as opportunities to reexamine systemic inequalities and reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and just society. It’s important that we sustain that work every day,” said Dr. Lam.
